I’m all for tools that make digging easier, especially in my heavy clay soil. Hand digging hundreds of spring blooming bulbs irritates the arthritis in my hands so I REALLY appreciate my Twist ‘n Plant auger from @power_planter and @provenwinners It does the hard work for me so that all I have to do is plop the bulbs in the holes. The only way this could be any easier is if I had one of the longer augers, then I wouldn’t have to squat at all. 💦 Before I store my hoses for the winter, I make sure to give all my recently planted (in the last three years) conifers a good drink.

💦 Thirsty conifers with unestablished root systems heading into winter are less likely to survive than those that receive a deep soak before the ground freezes.

💦 During the winter, conifers transpire or lose water through their needles. If they haven’t been watered thoroughly, desiccation can lead to death of the evergreen.

The week of Thanksgiving and Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Ruby Slippers’ is still hanging onto some gorgeous color! At 3’-4’ tall and wide, she tucks perfectly into small spaces. If you grow corn and can’t seem to do it without a corn worm 🐛 invasion, add borage to your seed list this winter.

I’ve grown corn every year and it’s always such a disappointment to peel back the husk and find kernels turned to mush by unwelcome visitors.

So this year I companion planted my corn with borage seed in one of my @vego_garden beds. I direct sowed the corn and borage at the same time and when harvest came, not a single ear had a worm.

It’s said that the scent of borage repels worms, although I don’t detect an unpleasant odor from it. And the flowers attract predatory 🐞and beneficial insects 🐝 that help keep pest populations in check without resorting to chemical controls.

The flower is edible too and has a cucumbery flavor. Quite refreshing!

Keep in mind, once you plant borage, you’ll likely ALWAYS have borage. It’s a heavy seeder.
