LUNCH BREAK! I keep my @vego_garden bag by the back door so I can grab it and squeeze in a bit of garden tidying between deadlines and meetings. I throw everything I might need in there - gloves, snips, pruners, rabbit repellant - and it cuts down on the amount of time I would spend gathering up my gear. The last @vego_garden raised bed is in and will be full of strawberries in a few months! I used the 17” tall 4-in-1 kit for this tight corner and was able to fit the 3.5’x2’ configuration. Assembly is a piece of cake and my raised bed garden is complete. I’ll line the bottom with hardware cloth to deter critters and fill it with compost this weekend. The first veg seeds of 2023 are sown! I always start with peppers as they take the longest to germinate compared to other veg. The @vivosun.official heat mat gives them the boost they need to germinate faster. I bought a thermostat last year to control the temperature, setting it at 80 degrees.

If you’re wondering what I’m using to drop the seeds into the @burpeegardening windowsill seed starting tray, it’s a toothpick. It’s the perfect tool for picking up seeds and depositing them exactly where and at the depth I want them in each cell. Just give it a lick and you’re good to go! It works especially well with teeny tiny seeds. Once the seeds were in place, I sprinkled the top of each cell with some vermiculite and misted the surface. It prevents the soil from drying out too fast and also helps to ward off the dreaded fungus responsible for damping off.

I did two seeds per cell for an insurance policy and will thin to the strongest seedlings in a few weeks.

I love the chop and drop method of garden clean-up and I did a little of it today. You could also run your lawn mower over your perennial beds and I’ve done that as well. But we’ve had some rain and the ground is very soft. I went with the pruners to avoid compacting my already dense soil. Do you chop and drop? Happy Spring! American Goldrush rudbeckia is another low maintenance perennial that gives way more than it takes. Despite my back and forth with plant choices for the redo of my patio garden, this has been a constant. I have several clumps of it throughout the garden and will divide it again for this space. Other plants in this very narrow garden include Allium ‘Millenium,’ Shasta daisy ‘Becky’ and James Galway climbing rose from David Austin.
