We’ve never trusted store bought lettuce, for obvious reasons. Growing your own greens couldn’t be easier! A little @true_organic_ raised bed fertilizer to replenish nutrients in my @vego_garden raised bed, a packet of mesclun mix which is a mixture of several types of greens and regular watering is all it takes. This is my favorite spot in the garden. And when I asked myself why that is, I kept coming back to the tropicals squeezed into this little corner. Specifically the Bronze Peach cannas (my favorite in the Cannova series) and the Royal Hawaiian Waikiki colocasia, a 2023 All-American Selections ornamental winner. Without them, it would be less. I think I may have FINALLY cracked the code for this hanging basket. Three times a charm! It hangs on my patio in full sun. Most things start out looking great in it early in the season, and then it’s all downhill. Except this year. I planted a combo of Mojave Fuchsia and Mojave Tangerine purslane from @provenwinners and it just keeps getting better and developing that over-the-edge spill I love. The fuchsia is definitely winning. But the pollinators are loving it. And because purslane is a succulent, these hot dry conditions suit it just fine. I love all the textures and shapes going on in thi

I love all the textures and shapes going on in this little corner of my garden. From the Lavender Lady Mangave to the Royal Hawaiian Waikiki colocasia to the Montrose White Calamintha to the Pink Chiffon rose of Sharon, it’s all knitting together in that wild way that I love. I’m seeing one adjustment for next year though and I think it’s most evident in that final image. Another Waikiki colocasia would perfectly fill that gap. I planted some coleus there, a variety called Velveteen, but I think it may be too dark. We’ll see once the Little Lime hydrangea blooms and the coleus fills in a little more. 🤔 @waltersgardens @provenwinners @pwcolorchoice #colocasia #mixedborder #mangave #colocasia #hereshegrows

I’ve never had much luck with phlox. Powdery mildew was always a thing. But despite the rain and humidity, and we’ve had a lot of it, these two varieties are standouts. Pictured are Phlox paniculata Ka-Pow Soft Pink from @darwinperennials in pix one and three. I have it planted in two different locations and am impressed with how well it’s done in some pretty dry soil near a maple tree in my front yard. The second photo is Luminary Ultraviolet from @provenwinners and I’ve combined it with Stand By Me clematis and Lemon Squeeze pennisetum. #perennialgarden #suburbangarden #phloxpaniculata #zone6a #hereshegrows
