Tried-and-True Plants
My garden index is a curated collection of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and vegetables that I’ve worked with in my Chicago-area zone 6a garden these last 25 years. Success starts with knowledge and the ability to persevere even when things don’t go according to plan. That’s gardening! But a little success builds confidence and let’s face it, you’re going to kill LOTS of plants. So my hope is that a list of my tried-and-trues will instill in you the desire to be a life-long gardener. I can’t say with 100% certainty they’ll thrive in your garden, but these have worked for me and are worth a look.

You can grow a garden anywhere!
No acreage needed…I promise!
The beautiful thing about gardening is that you can do it anywhere. Whether it’s a suburban backyard, postage stamp-sized patio or a tiny porch, your garden is adaptable to you and your space. You absolutely can grow vegetables, flowers, trees and shrubs anywhere provided you have the desire to experiment, the willingness to accept failure and the understanding that gardening isn’t an esoteric thing reserved only for those in “the know.” The more you garden, the more you’ll grow into “the know.” And the best part of all, at least for me, is the terrific amount of joy and peace my garden has brought me for over 20 years.
