Thanks to HISEA for partnering with me on this post. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own. A few months ago, a work boot company called HISEA (pronounced "Hi-Sea") reached out to me about reviewing a garden boot of my choice. I wasn't familiar with them so before agreeing, I dug into their background, read customer reviews and decided it warranted a deeper dive. So I accepted a pair of their waterproof mid-calf rain boots, no strings attached, and here's what I think... Cost The price tag is a big deal. While I'm all for quality stuff, dropping serious coin on anything takes consideration. With two kids in college, two hundred dollar rain boots ain't happening any time soon! At $26.99 for my mid-calf rain boots, no one's going hungry for mama's kicks. So from a cost ...

Four Ways to Repel Rabbits in the Garden
When I was little, I rooted for Peter Rabbit as he narrowly escaped Mr. McGregor's garden. How could anything so cute be so detested? Thing is, I wasn't a gardener back then and there was nothing to lose. Boy have things changed and my opinion of these critters has done a total one-eighty. Case in point. I found myself on airgundepot.com yesterday weighing my options. That's where my head is right now. Homicidal. It's my knee-jerk reaction to seeing my craspedia, kniphofia, allium, coneflower and roses mowed to the ground. If you could see the destruction, you'd understand. At least I hope you might. Before you contemplate unfollowing me, please hang in there. I have a few ways to repel rabbits that don't involve firearms. Gardening is hard work which is why I have so much animosity ...
Why Rugosa Rose Is A Lazy Gardener’s Dream
I was doing a live chat on Instagram a few months ago with my friend Erin, you know her as The Impatient Gardener, and we briefly touched on roses. Our conversation turned to them when I asked her about a plant she was over. She thought for a moment and replied "roses." Too much work, too needy, too demanding. I get it. All valid points. Erin lives in Wisconsin, a stones throw from lake Michigan. Winters are harsh, the season short. We didn't really dig into her response but immediately after she said it, I resisted the urge to argue the case for the rugosa rose. My rugosas are the Rosie the Riveters of the rose world, full of beauty, brawn and multi-season interest. After all, rugose means rugged or rough, which relates to the overall appearance of their thick toothy leaves, but ...
January Is A Great Month To Plan A New Garden
The Christmas decorations are packed away and I finally have space in my brain to think about something not holiday related. Why Heather, whatever could that be? No surprise here. Gardening is always front and center. In addition to the veg garden that got a glow-up at the end of 2022, I'm also focusing on the garden around our patio. My husband built it for me over a decade ago and I've filled it randomly over the years, without ever making a real plan. How hard could it be to plant a narrow border? Well, as you can see from the photo above, I have my work cut out for me. I've been a let's-throw-it-at-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks sort of gardener. Which isn't always a good thing. There's something to be said for a plan, no matter how big or small and I feel like this small space ...
Choosing the Right Sunflowers for Your Garden
Happy New Year, garden tribe! It's early January which means I'm buried in seed catalogs and slightly overwhelmed. I want so much! Not because I need it but because I have this thing for plants. Animal shelters have the same effect. If I had the land, and the money, I'd bring everyone home with me. All kidding aside, winter is a time of reflection as well as one of hope for all that's possible in the garden. And as I thought about my garden and how very mediocre it was in 2022, one thing struck me. I really love sunflowers. Perhaps the saying "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" really is true. There wasn't a single sunflower in my garden last year, the first time in over a decade, and I certainly don't want to repeat that in 2023. Of course there were rudbeckia, coneflowers and ...
Raised Bed Garden Glow Up Part 2: Staining
Thanks to Vermont Natural Coatings for partnering with me on this post. All thoughts and opinions belong to yours truly. When it comes to staining my raised beds, it's gotta be clean. If you go to any home improvement center looking for exterior wood stain, you'll find shelf after shelf of options that will do the job. Very few however, offer the reassurance I require of anything I use in and around my home. The thought of chemicals invading the soil in my organic garden and infiltrating the fruits and veg I grow for my family creeps me out. I've always been conscious of the foods we eat, especially so following the diagnosis of my daughter's digestive disorder in 2017. I became an even bigger food snob. Quality of life comes down to lifestyle and clean food is a huge part of that ...
